ARCHIMEDES: Innovative measuring device for the characterization of surface quality
In collaboration with the University of Ioannina and Theta Metrisis
Strict surface quality specifications
The surface quality of mechanical components used in industry is the most critical factor for the quality and efficient operation of the final products. For this reason, the industry sets high standards for surface quality with critical indicators:
The height of the surface roughness
The surface must have very low friction to ensure ease of cleaning and removal of pathogens.
The shaping of the roughness
Peaking in the oil holding cavities should be avoided.
Corrosion resistance
Elimination of pores with curing coatings should be ensured.
Inability to characterize surface quality
The available surface quality control instruments are unable to characterize surface quality with the above specifications. They are limited to measuring roughness height (Ra, Rq, Rt, etc.), creating ambiguities regarding the type and micro-geometry of the surface.
Problematic use of specialized instruments
Even the use of specialized scientific instruments (Stylus profilometer, AFM, Optical Interference Profiler) is problematic. Due to the requirement for specific configuration, they are unable to characterize the quality of internal surfaces of cavities and holes (borings). Additionally, they have very high installation and operating costs, require handling by specialized personnel, and are not compatible with the machine shop environment.
Innovative measuring device for the characterization of surface quality
As part of the ARCHIMEDES Project, an innovative measuring device was developed to simplify the direct recording of the quality of produced surfaces in a scientifically validated manner… even in hard-to-reach areas, such as internal cavities, without altering the surface. The new measuring device incorporates a system for the objective characterization of surface quality using statistical roughness parameters and the combined utilization of reflectivity measurements, interferometry algorithms and statistical stochastic methods of analysis and adaptation.
A comprehensive system for surface characterization
In addition to roughness quantification typical values, the ARCHIMEDES system provides an overall picture of surface finish and formation quality. It is applicable even in cases of improvement or decorative coatings, making it a comprehensive system for surface characterization.
